Two people have been killed and a dozen more wounded as rival camps clashed in the streets of the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.

The causalities included a Palestinian nurse who was gunned down by sniper fire.

A security official noted that the Lebanese army has been ordered to increase patrols and arrest anyone who threatens public security. The troops are ordered to use force if necessary.

Tripoli unrest appears to be the deadliest incident in Lebanon since the Doha peace deal came into effect a month ago.

The power sharing deal was reached between rival factions so as to end political crisis that resulted in deadly clashes in May, which raised fears of a return to all-out civil war.

Clashes between opposition and pro-government groups erupted two weeks ago in the northern port city. The latest development, takes the number of casualties to 11.

Hezbollah

Hezbollah has slammed ‘the media propaganda’ about Tuesday’s clashes in Beirut which ‘was aimed at misleading public opinion’.

In a statement issued by the movement’s office, Hezbollah termed as regrettable ‘the misleading propaganda’ and ‘media attacks’ about the clashes in the Kurnish Mazraa neighborhood.

The statement called on media to ask security institutions to provide them with the facts about the incidents.

The statement added a row started after a group of youths celebrating the anniversary of the liberation of southern Lebanon were attacked by stones in the Kurnish Mazraa neighborhood.

A member of al-Mostaqbal faction hurled a bomb at the youths but it exploded prematurely and several people were wounded.

Hezbollah said security forces are well informed about the incident and know who were behind it.

Iraqi Deaths

At least 11 Iraqis have been killed when gunfire broke out after a roadside bombing in eastern Baghdad near Sadr City, police have said.

Sadr City itself remained calm, a day after some 10,000 Iraqi troops fanned out in the district in the government’s biggest move yet to establish control in the area.

Mahdi Army fighters were not visible in the streets of Sadr City, and long-closed shops began to reopen in parts of the district hardest hit by past clashes.

Iraqi soldiers and police are setting up more checkpoints to beef up their hold there.
